Avis Ann Oehlbeck Gachet
July 20, 1932 - December 13, 2024
Avis Ann Oehlbeck Gachet died at home on Friday, Dec. 13, 2024, after a brief decline. Born July 20, 1932, in Rochester, New York, to Luther W. Oehlbeck and Avis Johnson Oehlbeck, she grew up in Kinston and Morganton, North Carolina. Avis attended Morganton High School and then St. Genevieve-of-the-Pines in Asheville, graduating in 1950. In 1954, she earned her bachelor’s degree from Duke University. Avis then taught high school English in Baltimore, Maryland, while her husband, Fred S. Gachet, Jr., attended medical school. From 1962 to 1964, they lived in West Berlin, Germany, where their first two children were born. In 1965, they settled in Hickory, where their third child was born and where Avis lived the rest of her days.
