Beginning in the Middle (midBEGINNINGdle)
All parishioners in middle school are encouraged to attend a fun-filled and spiritually enriching retreat for youth in grades 6 to 8. This retreat is sponsored by the diocese and is held at the Valle Crucis Conference Center. It is a great way for youth to connect with friends from around the diocese and to start their academic year off with their souls and minds deeply grounded in God. The retreat is limited to 86 participants, and it would be wonderful for Ascension to have a great turn out. If your child would like to attend, please complete a registration form and return it to the office as soon as possible. Scholarships are available from the church and diocese if needed. Contact Karla if you need assistance. Carpools will leave from the church Friday, Sept. 17, and return on Sunday, Sept. 19. If you have any questions please contact Karla (

All Parish Book Read: Blood Done Sign My Name by Timothy B. Tyson Book Discussion, Wed. Jan. 5 at 7 pm
Brief Description of Blood Done Sign My Name: "The battle for civil rights was not won in the sixties - certainly not in many parts of the country. It never touched Oxford, North Carolina, where young Tim Tyson was growing up. In 1970, when a black man was killed in the town square by a Klansman and his sons, and an all-white jury acquitted the murderers, both blacks and whites were swept into a firestorm. Amid the violence and fear that enveloped the town, Tim's father attempted to bring the two sides together, only to be reviled as a traitor to both sides. Tim - now a professor of African-American studies at the University of Wisconsin - has written a memoir of that turbulent summer, and has gone back, thirty years later, to find a remnant of scorched justice. |

Please Welcome Roger Speer as our new Director of Children and Youth Ministry. Roger is a native of West Virginia and is excited about returning to the Appalachian mountains. Roger has a BS in Graphic Design and Secondary Education from West Liberty University in WV. He worked for 7 years as the Diocesan Missioner for Youth Ministry in the Diocese of Ohio and has worked for the past 2 years as a Missionary in the Diocese of the Virgin Islands as the Diocesan Youth Missioner. Roger is an Eagle Scout and enjoys being outside, hiking, and camping. Roger writes about himself on his Blog: " I am an exile from the mountains of West Virginia. I am an artist, a designer, and I search for balance in my life and the world around me. I love to laugh, be entrenched in nature, and connecting with people as often and deeply as I can." Roger began his work at Ascension in mid- July.
