Today kids from Durgapur, Ansansol, Purulia, and Bankura came to St. Michael's school to compete in the annual sports event. 20 youth from each location compete against their classmates, and if they qualify for an event they come to compete against the other schools. In addition, youth from the Child Development center performed a dance to the Slumdog Millionaire Soundtrack's "Jai Ho." For the last 2 years the Bankura youth have been working with a Taekwando teacher (Bubun) who within the last 6 months also began working with the youth in Durgapur. Today over 60 kids performed a Taekwando demonstration with some of the youth breaking pottery boards and performing running kick jumps with their classmates serving as "stairs."

Over 120 kids gathered and competed for awards which were given out for each winner of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. The awards consist of tin/metal plates (small for 3rd, medium sized for 2nd, and large for 1st) which is a wonderful gift to the kids since they are useful and can be used for any number of different things in their homes and by their families.

I arrived in the kolkata (Calcutta) airport at 1 am, and after collecting my bags I was greeted by my good friend Sandipan Sinha.  On the 2 1\2 hour ride back to the compound we got a flat tire,so Sandy and I waited as the tire was changed talking nonstop having a whole years worth of news to catch up on.  The next morning I was able to catch up on sleep until Sandy and our missionary, Lynn Coulthard, came to wake me up at noon with instant coffee and conversation.  I spent the rest of the day saying hello to everyone and then went to the development center to see all the kids.  That, as always, was the highlight of my day!
